Are we going to get a Triple Crown winner this year? If Mystik Dan crosses the line first at Pimlico Race Course this Saturday, it could be on, and his hopes have been boosted by the withdrawal of Bob Baffert's pre-race favorite Muth. Here's where to watch 2024 Preakness Stakes live streams online for free – from anywhere.
It’s time for the 149th Preakness Stakes, the middle jewel of the Triple Crown. The 2024 Kentucky Derby concluded with a three-horse photo finish, with 18-1 shot Mystik Dan taking the lead over Sierra Leone and Forever Young. Mystik Dan's pursuit of the 2024 Triple Crown continues this Saturday, with Preakness 149. Coverage of the second leg of the Triple Crown will begin at 1:30 p.m. this Saturday.
If you’re a fan of horse racing, there’s just no better time of year than May. With the historic running of the 150th Kentucky Derby kicking off the month in impressive fashion (both on and off the track), fans are now looking forward to the upcoming 149th running of the venerable Preakness Stakes, the second leg of the elusive Triple Crown.
There have only ever been 13 Triple Crown winners, the most recent being Justify six years ago. So if Mystik Dan, who shocked punters by taking glory at the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, is able to repeat the feat in Baltimore, it'll set up a must-watch Belmont Stakes in three weeks' time.
Trainer Ken McPeek has won the Preakness before, with Swiss Skydiver four years ago, and the news of the fever that led to Muth's scratching would have certainly come as a relief, seeing as Baffert's horse has got the better of Mystik Dan before.
Baffert, an eight-time Preakness winner, is hanging his hopes on Imagination instead, who'll be mounted by a legendary race debutant in Frankie Dettori. Catching Freedom, of Brad Cox's stable, has a good shot too, and jockey Flavien Prat has won this race before, atop Rombauer three years ago.
Despite his win at Churchill Downs a couple weeks ago, Mystik Dan wasn't initially the favorite to win the Preakness Stakes. That distinction belonged to Muth, trained by Bob Baffert, but the horse was scratched earlier this week due to an elevated temperature.
Now, Mystik Dan is the favorite at 5/2 odds, but there are still a few more contenders in the field. Another Baffert-trained horse, Imagination, is in the mix with 6-1 odds after finishing second at the Santa Anita Derby.
Trainer Ken McPeek remains confident in Mystik Dan ahead of the second straight massive race in just three weeks.
"He's a real quiet horse. I've used the terminology that he's an old soul. Nothing much phases him at all, which makes our job really easy," McPeek told reporters this week. "He's been in the paddock at Oaklawn before and it's a similar paddock to Oaklawn. We're not a complicated outfit, we keep it simple."

Baffert is no stranger to the winner's circle at Pimlico. National Treasure, another horse trained by the prolific trainer, won the 2023 Preakness Stakes at 4-1 odds.
Catching Freedom (6-1) finished fourth at the Kentucky Derby and will be vying for an even better result at the Preakness Stakes. Tuscan Gold (8-1) is trained by Chad Brown, who has produced two Preakness winners in the past seven years (Cloud Computing in 2017, Early Voting in 2022).
Just Steel (15-1) is coming off a rough 17th-place finish at the Kentucky Derby and enters the Preakness as a longshot.
Muth, the favorite to win this year's Preakness Stakes, has been scratched because of a fever, opening the door for Mystik Dan to potentially win the first two legs of the Triple Crown.
The path to victory will be filled with other challengers, though, and Mystik Dan doesn't have much experience with a two-week turnaround. The thoroughbred managed to hang on at the end of the Kentucky Derby, but he was clearly slowing down as he trotted toward the finish line.
The big question is whether Mystik Dan will have enough energy to keep his Triple Crown dreams alive against a fresh contender like Imagination. Horse racing fans will get the answer to that question on Saturday night.
The second-jewel of the Triple Crown comes up a bit soft and short for the second straight year. Eight stakes races Saturday are headlined by the $2 million Grade 1 Preakness Stakes. Expert picks and horse racing insight is provided for the biggest day of horse racing at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore on Saturday, May 18.
